England vs. Slovenia @ Katapult, FIFA 2010 World Cup

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Thank you to everyone who managed to come to our football event last week and for all the lovely messages; a fantastic sunny afternoon of football which coincided with the celebration of Katapult’s Birthday.

Football is still a bit of a sore topic at the moment around the Katapult studios after Sunday’s embarassing defeat for England against Germany. We’re now hoping Andy Murray can recoop some of the lost pride at Wimbledon. It was a different story however for the similarly dramatic but 100% more successful screening of the England vs. Slovenia match last week. We hosted an action packed afternoon of football for close contacts and friends here in our beautiful garden to celebrate Katapult’s 10th year in business, screening the game live in a marquee. We are pleased and quite frankly relieved that England had the 1-0 win they needed, thus avoiding a dis-heartened crowd. We were also very lucky that the sun was shining down on us, and we’re glad that everyone liked our new wildlife garden after help from the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust – we will be doing more on this next month so watch this space.

We handed the responsibility of the BBQ to our resident chef and Channel 4 ‘Come Dine with Me’ winner Dan. All produce was sourced from local suppliers; some fresh meat from Denstone Hall Farm Shop, a keg of real ale from the Derby Brewing Company and some wonderful mini football themed cakes from Cameo Cupcakes.

We want to thank everyone for their donations and participation in the games that we organised for the day, we managed to raise a fanastic £543 which exceeded our fundraising target for the South African children’s charity ‘Magical Moments’, which runs activities for underprivileged children. We will be updating our blog next month with pictures and information to show how the money is spent.  A big thanks also to all our friends that generously donated the prizes for us to give away (listed below).

Congratulations to all the prize winners:

Two days left to submit your photography for FORMAT11 EXPOSURE exhibition!

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

FORMAT11 Open Submissions, receiving applications NOW - only until Thursday 10th June, so hurry and get your submissions in fast.

The FORMAT OPEN SUBMISSIONS website gives photographer’s all over the world a chance to submit new or exisiting work, of which a number will then be selected by judges to appear in the FORMAT11 EXPOSURE exhibition taking place in Derby next year.

The website functionality enables photographers to submit their work and pay for their submissions online. The administration of the site enables the FORMAT judges to view submitted entries and shortlist them independently online. The final shortlist will then be judged by a panel of industry experts.

‘Right Here, Right Now’ Exposures from the public realm
Artists working with or about photography and related media are invited to submit proposals for exhibitions or events, including new or existing works for exhibition or presentation as part of the EXPOSURE section of the festival. These opportunities are open to any artist/photographer based in the UK or Internationally.

The EXPOSURE exhibitions for FORMAT11 will be held in 30 venues throughout Derby city centre. Selected artists will be included in the FORMAT11 brochure, website, catalogue and be profiled as part of the festival.

All applications must relate to the festival theme: ‘Right Here, Right Now’ Exposures from the public realm. The theme is deliberately broad allowing practitioners to respond in a number of ways from purely conceptual works through to social documentary and street photography.

Further information on the festival theme is contained within the Application Guidelines.

FORMAT11: EXPOSURE – Submit an application

All applications must be received by 12 midnight (UK GMT) 10th June 2010. Applications received after this time cannot be considered. Only successful applicants will be contacted by the end of June 2010.

It was Derby’s reputation for Photography that played a significant role as to how and why Katapult was formed and is located in the city today; two of Katapult’s founding director’s Dawn and Anthony came  here to study at the University of Derby back in 1998 due its reputation for Photography degrees.

Katapult have been working with FORMAT International Photography Festival since 2007. Last year, for FORMAT09 – Photocinema, Katapult worked closely with the FORMAT team to develop the  marketing campaign, festival materials and website. We also did significant development work on MOB FORMAT which integrated flickr with a flash gallery within the site which increased  international engagement and participation in the festival.
