Eco-Fest 2009

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I had  a great time this weekend volunteering on The Great Orangutan Project stand at Eco Fest in Derby’s Markeaton Park, helped by the good weather and the positive eco atmosphere.

Everyone was very interested in the project and it was nice to help raise awareness – even  if the kids did keep referring to the orangutans as monkeys! We raised a fair amount for the project by selling raffle tickets and t-shirts and I sold a few of Dawn’s photographics prints which she took while working on the project in Borneo.

Markeaton Park was buzzing with families and seemed to be a really great day out for everyone, with great live music, veggie food stalls and lots of entertainment for the kids. More importantly, it was great to see all the kids interested and involved with the environmental activities such as making bird boxes in the Do One Thing for Wildlife tent and crazy things out of recycled products in the Waste Not Want Not tent. If you missed it, you missed out.

Thanks to Fiona from The Great Orangutan Project and husband Ray who helped make the weekend enjoyable and raised lots of money for the project.

Eco-Fest 2009 back in Derby this weekend

This year, the main theme of Eco-Fest 2009 will be climate change. The emphasis will be on raising awareness of the environment and giving people ideas on what they can do to help.

There will be a number of themed marquee areas such as ‘Do One Thing for Wildlife’, ‘Grow Your Own’ and ‘Travelwise’ all with various interactive information and games for the kids. There will be fair trade things on sale, as well as other home grown produce from local allotment holders.

Other exciting features of the event are live music, non animal based circus ‘The Croissant Neuf’, storytelling, facepainting, a bouncy castle and slide and plenty of other family friendly activities.

As Dawn will be in Berlin, I will be standing in on the Great Orangutan Project stand in the ‘Do One Thing for Wildlife’ marquee. As part of her sabbatical earlier this year, Dawn worked on the project in Borneo for a month. She took some amazing pictures which will be sold this weekend with all proceeds going back into the project. So, please come down and see me on the stand. To preview the prints, please have a look at Dawn’s blog.

Eco-Fest will be held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September – 11am until 5pm in Markeaton Park.

Eco-Fest is ideally placed in context of the recent 10:10 launch – the national campaign to reduce emissions by 10% in 2010. Please join up like us.

Dawn’s photographic prints from her sabbatical to Borneo on The Great Orangutan Project earlier this year are now available to buy online.

The prints were exhibited and sold at an event at QUAD in May, alongside a talk to raise awarness by Leo who works on the project in Borneo. The exhibition alone raised £910 for the project.

The new blog includes images and print sizes along with mounted canvasses which are all available to buy and ALL money raised will go straight back into the project.

The prints are now available to buy on the Orangutan Photographic Prints blog along with more information about the project itself and Dawn’s experience.
