katapult christmas e-card

We have just sent out our 2009 Katapult Christmas e-card, which features some exclusive footage from the elves workshop.

This year Katapult led a partnership to create a Christmas Playground in Derby’s market place. The six giant wooden toys were created by ‘a very special elf’ local wood sculptor Andrew Frost, which will be relocated to Royal Derby Hospital children’s ward in the new year.

A huge thankyou to all the partners involved in the Christmas Playground project and also to Doug Smith for his poem reading talent and to the Cathedral Quarter Hotel for use of their secret elves room.

This year we have made a donation to the Lewis Mighty Fund.

And because Katapult love Christmas so much, we were asked to produce more festive e-cards for clients, such as University of Derby and QUAD.

We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a magical 2010.

Don't Stop Believing Exhibition at QUAD

The new ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ exhibition was launched at QUAD on Friday 18th September to a busy crowd of families and art lovers alike. We went along to have a look and found the gallery space transformed into a hands-on family friendly environment with activities for all ages, encouraging people to get involved.

There is a ‘Hidden Stories’ area with short written records of myths and legends in the local area, sent in by the public and collated by QUAD – we read some creepy ghost stories about Derby! Other things worth seeing are ‘The QUADMOS’ solar system and an ‘Interactive Forest’ full of fantasy creatures and animations. Derby artist Fay Nicolson has also devised ‘All Work and No Play’ a production line for making party hats! It has to be seen to be fully appreciated!

The exhibition will be in the gallery spaces and throughout the QUAD building until mid November and includes exhibitions, performances and events all based around the ‘art of participation.’ The activities will invite people to ‘see, touch, make and do, to enjoy and explore’  and are suitable for all ages.

Katapult produced the VIP invites to the launch which were designed to be doodled on and then fitted together as a sculpture on the night.

See the QUAD website for more details.

Busy Derby Feste Weekend

Monday, September 7th, 2009

In addition to representing our city in the Search Party VS Derby table tennis tournament, the Katapult team were also around to sample the rest of the events on offer over the Derby Feste weekend.

We took part in some unusual activities at QUAD on Saturday afternoon. Dawn and Dan had an intimate experience in the Coors Cafe Bar taking part in the Etiquette event; all we know is there was headphones and role playing involved. Meanwhile some of us were using our ‘creativity’ in the QUADMOS project, helping to make a solar system made up of Derby towns. We created a Chaddesden/Chester Green planet. Pop in to QUAD to have a look or make your own! All efforts will be exhibited in QUAD later this year.

Saturday evening entertainment began for us watching bands on Cathedral Green and chuckling at the very funny Vegetable Nannies. We then made our way to the market place for what we think was the highlight of the weekend, the Mobile Homme Transe Express drummers! Hoards of people gathered to watch as the drummers came banging their way through the crowds before being attached to a giant crane and lifted high into the Derby sky, above the Guildhall and QUAD.

addictive TV

The evening ended with a unique performance by the world’s number one Audio Visual artists Addictive TV (above), who got everyone moving again with their blend of classic and contemporary film, dance music and stunning visuals with a spectacular performance using the BBC Big Screen.

Although in true concert tradition, it poured on Sunday evening for the start of the Darley Park Concert, it did dry up later in time for the incredible classical crescendo and fireworks. Thousands of people sat the rain out to see the end of the Derby Feste celebrations for another year.

Dawn’s photographic prints from her sabbatical to Borneo on The Great Orangutan Project earlier this year are now available to buy online.

The prints were exhibited and sold at an event at QUAD in May, alongside a talk to raise awarness by Leo who works on the project in Borneo. The exhibition alone raised £910 for the project.

The new blog includes images and print sizes along with mounted canvasses which are all available to buy and ALL money raised will go straight back into the project.

The prints are now available to buy on the Orangutan Photographic Prints blog along with more information about the project itself and Dawn’s experience.
